2025 San Francisco Miles for Melanoma

Carrie's Story

In October 2023, I was diagnosed with melanoma and had wide excisions on my chest and face. Thankfully, the margins were clear. For the past two years, I’ve had skin checks every three months, all of which have come back clear. Starting in 2025, my recurrence risk returns to normal, and I’ll move to checks every six months.

This was a scary experience, but I am grateful for the best possible outcome. If we’ve seen each other over the past two years, I have probably shown you my scars and told you to wear sunscreen and get your skin checked! I’m proud that so many of you have done just that.

Last year, Alex, James, Grace, and my mom joined me for Miles for Melanoma, a fun 5K walk or run through the San Francisco Zoo. You get early access, great views (and a few sleepy animals), post-race snacks, and a day at the zoo! We’d love for you to join us again this year on Sunday, November 16, for the 2025 Miles for Melanoma.

In celebration of my two-year cancer-free milestone, I’m also raising funds for the Melanoma Research Foundation, whose mission is to end melanoma through research, education, and advocacy. I won't hit you up for donations every year, but I wanted to use this personal milestone as an opportunity to support this lifesaving work that may benefit me, my children, and so many others in the future.

The cure for melanoma begins with me.

Melanoma is the deadliest and fastest growing form of skin cancer and we all want a cure to be found soon. Miles for Melanoma is the way people come together to take action and help support this fight and the mission of the Melanoma Research Foundation.

Every step matters and every step counts. Significant advancement has been made in the past few years in improved detection, new drug treatments and better survival rates. This progress has been built on the breakthroughs made fighting other types of cancers, as well as the existing foundation of melanoma research.

There is more to be done and a long way to go, but the finish line is in sight. The energy, enthusiasm and encouragement from patients, survivors, families, friends, caregivers, and the medical community impacts many lives and many future.
