Melanoma Milers
October 2024 marks two years since my dad suffered a severe headache that led to the discovery of a brain bleed causing significant swelling in his brain (with midline shift). Five months later, after multiple brain MRIs, we were informed that it was likely stage IV cancer responsible for the bleed. Following numerous biopsies, tests, and agonizing waiting, we learned the type of cancer was metastatic melanoma.
Now, two years later, after one craniotomy, three ICU stays, several hospital admissions, immunotherapy and steroid refractory pneumonitis, targeted therapy, radiation, and months of physical and occupational therapy, my dad continues to fight stage IV metastatic melanoma.
I still vividly recall the call from the pulmonologist with the pathology results while we were already in the hospital for a craniotomy to address a second bleed. In the midst of shock and fear, I found hope in the advancements in melanoma treatment, particularly immunotherapy. Below is a video we watched in the hospital after receiving the final diagnosis that brought me a lot of hope: https://vimeo.com/338412027
